György Németh (1951)
photographer, cartoonist
Photographer, graphic artist, teacher, who lives in Szeged. Until 1989 he worked at the Pedagogy Department of the Juhász Gyula Teacher Training College, and as an amateur he started to take photographs in the Kontakt group of the Szeged Photography Club. From 1989 he worked as a photojournalist for the MTI in the Southern Great Plain region, also in Vojvodina in Serbia and Partium in Romania. His news agency work was regularly entered in annual press photography competitions, winning numerous awards. His photographs were selected twice for the World Press Photo exhibition.
As a graphic artist and cartoonist, his work has been published in over a hundred books and other publications. He published two albums of his works. He has worked as a photographer in Iran, Cuba, Burma, Vietnam and several former Soviet republics. For several decades he has documented the world of the people living in the farmland of "homokhát" near Szeged. He currently teaches press photography at the Communication Department and the Vocational Training Institute of the University of Szeged.
In the last decade, he was documenting the still existing forms of farm life in the lowlands, the "artisans" of Szeged still working today, their work, and made a series of portraits of artists living in Szeged. His work has been exhibited in cities all over Hungary, at the invitation of various institutions and photography clubs.
